|Grigor Palikarov As a student at the State Musical Academy in Sofia - 1990-1996 - I have performed many concerts with the professional orchestra of the Academy (nearly three times per term, i.e. about eighteen concerts with various programmes which included Overtures, Concertos and Symphonies from the classical and romantic repertoire).
My debut as an opera conductor was in April 1994. At that time I was invited to conduct Verdi’s “Rigoletto” at the Pleven City Opera and the Stara Zagora City Opera (two years later I conducted the same piece at the Bourgass City Opera). In January 1995 I was selected as the best student from the conducting class of the Academy, to work as an assistant-conductor at the National Opera - Sofia for three months. During this period I’ve worked together with Prof. N. Nedyalkov on the new premiere of Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’amore”. Later on I’ve conducted stage performances of C. M. von Weber’s “Abu Hassan” (1995) and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Mozart and Salieri” (1996) at the Musical Academy’s Opera Theatre with students soloists and Academy’s orchestra. In July 1997 – a year after my graduation - I conducted the National Orchestra of Kingdom Belgium at the first round of Min-On International Conducting Competition and in August I conducted a concert with contemporary pieces at the Summer Academy “Prague - Vienna - Budapest” - Austria with the Ensemble “New Ton” - Vienna. Since May 1995 till March 1999 I have worked with the symphony orchestra of the Ensemble of Bulgarian Army and since July 1997 I’ve been the Chief conductor of the Ensemble. I’ve also been a conductor of the Youth Philharmonic orchestra “Pioneer” – Sofia. In 1998-1999 season I made my debut on the stage of the National Opera - Sofia, conducting a Gala-concert with the special participation of the famous Bulgarian opera singer Ghena Dimitrova.
Since January 2000 I work as full-time conductor at the National Opera and Ballet Theatre – Sofia, conducting a rich variety of repertoire and also I teach musical analysis at State Academy of Music and Dance Arts - Plovdiv as an Assistant-Professor. Moreover since the beginning of 2005/06 season I’ve taken the position of general artistic manager and conductor of the symphony orchestra – Pazardjik.
Nowadays I make regular recordings of orchestral pieces and opera ensembles as a principal guest conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio and also I conduct several concert tours abroad.
My repertoire at the Sofia National Opera includes “The Marriage of Figaro”, “The Barber of Seviglia”, “L’Italiana in Algeri”, “Lucia di Lamermoor”, “Traviata”, ”Rigoletto”, “I vespri siciliani”, ”Macbeth”, “Othello”, ”Pagliacci”, “Faust”, “Carmina Burana” ballets “Don Quixote”, “Cinderella” and others and my symphonic repertoire includes a large variety of pieces, including almost all of the classical and romantic ones, together with many contemporary works.
