The city of Rousse, with over 5000 years old history, is located on the higher bank of the Danube River. Here are saved about 200 buildings, which form part of the architectural and historical heritage of Bulgaria. The Monument of Freedom, built in 1908, the Drama Theatre and the High School of Music, the Commercial and Industrial chamber, the Church "Holy Trinity" of 1632, and the Opera are remarkable among the many buildings in Rousse.
This emblematic city is the center of large uplift and cultural tradition, it is seat and house of the State Ballet of Rousse.
The Rousse State Ballet was founded in 1949. The first ballet production was “Die Puppenfee” ("The Fairy Doll") from Josef Bayer, produced by the great Bulgarian master of dance Assen Manolov.
The Ballet group has a long and rich history and the work with local and international choreographers turned it into one of the most famous and prominent ballet groups in Bulgaria and in Eastern Europe. The company worked with almost all Bulgarian ballet masters - Assen Monolov, Peter Lukanov, Assen Gavrilov, Margarita Arnaudova, Hikmet Mehmedov and with foreign choreographers such as Giancarlo Vantaggio, Grivitskas Vytautas, Victor Power, Vilen Galstyan, Antón Fodor, Alain Bernard. The greatest Bulgarian ballet soloists - Vessa Tonova, Vera Kirova, Krassimira Koldamova, Bisser Deyanov, Yassen Valchanov and others dancеd on the stage in Rousse.
The Ballet troupe participated in performances in Belgium, Holland, Germany, France and other European countries. In 2004 the Ballet of Rousse was awarded the highest prize of the Union of Bulgarian Musicians and Dancers, the "Crystal-Lyre" for "Sleeping Beauty" by Tchaikovsky and the contribution in art.
The rich repertoire of the State Ballet Russe includes titles such as "Giselle", "Swan Lake", "Sleeping Beauty", "Don Quixote", "Nutcracker", "Carmina Burana" and many other titles of classical and modern ballet works.
From March to April 2009 on the initiative of Serdica Music the Rousse State Ballet visited the Spanish capital and on the stage of Teatro de Madrid the company presented a round оf performanes of "Giselle" and "Swan Lake". After the big success in Madrid, the Rousse State Ballet has been invited again in Madrid to present the ballets "Nutcracker" and "Swan Lake" in October 2009.
For many years director of the ballet has been Mariana Zacharieva. Since January 2013 director of the company is Vesa Tonova, the most eminent Bulgarian ballerina.
